<p>This repository's lockfile resolves Next.js 16.2.11. I choose and pin the current approved 16.x candidate on an isolated Amplify branch, test that package change by itself, and keep the existing lockfile ready to restore.</p>

<h2>Choose the target deliberately</h2>

<p>This repository declares Next.js <code>^16.2.11</code>, and the lockfile resolves 16.2.11. I check npm's current <code>latest</code> tag, review the applicable release and security notes, and replace the range with an exact test version on the branch. Next.js classifies the 16.x major as Active LTS; minor releases are not separate LTS tracks.</p><p>The <a href="https://nextjs.org/blog/next-16-3" rel="noopener noreferrer">Next.js 16.3 release notes</a> supplies the 16.3 feature and behavior changes that began this upgrade review. Current release notes decide the actual target before installation.</p>

<h2>Keep the host support gap visible</h2>

<p>AWS still documents managed Amplify SSR support through Next.js 15. Record that gap in the release notes and approval record. A successful 16.2 deployment does not establish provider support for 16.3.</p><p>The canary tests this project, while the <a href="https://docs.aws.amazon.com/amplify/latest/userguide/ssr-amplify-support.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">AWS Amplify Hosting Next.js support page</a> remains the source for the provider's public support claim. If production requires vendor-backed support, that distinction can decide the target version.</p>

<h2>Upgrade one dependency set</h2>

<p>I update Next.js, React, React DOM, and the lockfile as one reviewed change. The Node version stays fixed. I run the official upgrade tooling where applicable and inspect every codemod edit instead of accepting a large mechanical diff.</p><p>I also record the package-manager version and compare the resolved React peer dependencies before and after installation. That small snapshot distinguishes a framework regression from a lockfile or toolchain change when the branch build behaves differently across local and hosted builds.</p><p>Experimental flags remain unchanged during the first pass. New features such as Instant Navigations receive separate cards after the baseline upgrade works.</p>

<h2>Run the production command locally</h2>

<p>Type checking, lint, tests, and <code>next build</code> run against the upgrade commit. I start the production server and request static, SSR, dynamic, API, image, auth, 404, and error routes.</p><p>Next.js 16.3 adds debugging and performance features, but release-note benchmarks do not predict this application's result. I record local evidence without repeating vendor percentages as my own measurement.</p>

<h2>Deploy a branch preview</h2>

<p>The Amplify preview uses the same environment shape with synthetic or staging data. I compare build warnings, route output, first request logs, cookies, cache behavior, images, and response headers with the production baseline.</p><p>I repeat the slowest and most important requests after a cold period. Warm cache success can hide a missing runtime dependency.</p>

<h2>Promote with one revert path</h2>

<p>The prior lockfile and version commit remain ready to redeploy. Backend schema changes stay out of this release, which makes a frontend rollback safe.
