WordPress can work well when a team owns its plugins, updates, access, staging, backups, and recovery. It becomes difficult when those decisions accumulate without an owner.
WordPress Is Not the Enemy, Misusing WordPress Is
WordPress began as a blogging platform and has grown into a general-purpose website builder. It works well for blogs, small marketing sites, and content teams needing basic editing. But many businesses stretch WordPress into something it wasn't originally designed to be: a custom application platform, ecommerce system, integration hub, workflow engine, headless API, membership platform, learning portal, or multi-site governance system. When plugins become the architecture, the website becomes fragile.
The First Problem: Plugin-First Architecture
Plugins are easy to install, and that makes them easy to abuse. Every plugin adds code, database tables, settings, update cycles, and security risk. Plugins often overlap responsibilities, leading to conflicts. Businesses install plugins for forms, SEO, sliders, redirects, caching, security, backups, ecommerce, memberships, custom fields, SMTP, analytics, popups, page builders, events, and schema. At some point, the website is no longer a designed system. It's a pile of third-party decisions.WordPress plugin bloat is what happens when architecture is replaced by the "Add New Plugin" button.Strapi and Next.js offer a different approach. Content types are modeled intentionally. APIs are explicit. Frontend components live in version control. Business logic isn't hidden across a dozen plugin settings screens. Deployment follows development, staging, and production workflows.
The Second Problem: Security Is an Ongoing Job, Not a Plugin
Many people install a security plugin and assume their site is safe. That's not enough. WordPress is heavily targeted because of its popularity. Attackers scan for known vulnerable plugins, and many attacks don't require custom hacking. Outdated plugins and themes create repeatable attack paths. Weak admin passwords and reused passwords make compromise easier. Shared hosting and poor permissions increase risk. Nulled plugins and themes are dangerous. Backups are often missing or untested. Malware cleanup is expensive. Security monitoring is often ignored until something breaks.WordPress documentation recommends keeping plugins and themes current and taking a backup before updates. That recurring work belongs in the operating plan, not in an occasional cleanup project.
The Third Problem: WordPress Sites Are Easy to Hack at Scale
A better statement isn't "WordPress is always insecure." A better statement is "WordPress is easy to attack at scale when site owners rely on outdated plugins, weak passwords, exposed admin pages, cheap hosting, and poor maintenance."

A vulnerable form plugin can expose thousands of sites.

A vulnerable page builder can affect a huge install base.

A vulnerable SMTP plugin can leak sensitive logs.

A vulnerable map plugin can allow privilege escalation.

A compromised plugin supply chain can affect many sites at once.

For businesses, it doesn't matter whether the issue came from core, a plugin, hosting, or user error. If the site is down, defaced, blacklisted by Google, sending spam, or leaking data, the business takes the damage.
The Fourth Problem: Page Builders Hide Technical Debt Behind Pretty Screens
Page builders are attractive because they help nontechnical users move fast. But they can also create long-term problems. Bloated markup, shortcodes or proprietary blocks, theme lock-in, difficult migrations, slow pages, harder accessibility control, harder performance optimization, inconsistent design systems, editors accidentally breaking layouts, and business logic mixed with presentation. In a modern React/Next.js site, design components can be reusable, tested, reviewed, and deployed through Git. Editors can manage content in a CMS without controlling the entire layout engine.
The Fifth Problem: Developer Experience Matters
Many developers dislike WordPress because custom work can feel awkward. Hooks, filters, globals, legacy PHP patterns, theme files, plugin interactions, and admin-driven configuration can make the system hard to reason about. A skilled WordPress developer can build excellent work. But that's the point. Good WordPress requires skill, discipline, and constraints. It's not automatically simple just because the admin dashboard looks easy. For developers used to Laravel, Next.js, Strapi, Rails, Django, or modern API-first systems, WordPress can feel like building around history instead of building from a clean architecture.
The Sixth Problem: Governance and Platform Risk
The public conflict involving WordPress leadership, Automattic, WordPress.org, WP Engine, trademark questions, contribution expectations, and plugin access showed that the WordPress ecosystem is not just software. It's a platform with governance, commercial interests, community expectations, and infrastructure dependencies.Even if a company never uses WP Engine, the drama matters because it showed how ecosystem decisions can affect developers, agencies, plugin authors, and customers. The risk isn't only technical. It's operational and strategic. If a business depends on WordPress.org updates, plugins, themes, repositories, hosting partners, and commercial vendors, platform governance becomes part of the risk model.
The Seventh Problem: WordPress Is Often Sold as Cheap, But Maintained as Expensive
Low upfront build cost can hide long-term maintenance. Plugin licenses add up. Premium themes add lock-in. Security plugins, backup tools, caching tools, SMTP tools, forms, SEO tools, and page builders all add cost. Agencies inherit messy sites from previous vendors. Performance cleanup becomes a project. Malware cleanup becomes an emergency. Migrations become painful. Custom work becomes slower because the developer must work around previous plugin decisions. The cheapest WordPress site is often the most expensive one to own.
The Eighth Problem: WordPress Can Be Bad for Structured Content
WordPress started as a blogging platform. It can support custom post types, custom fields, taxonomies, and headless delivery. But many structured content workflows require additional plugins, developer customization, and discipline.

Location pages

Staff profiles

Events

Products

Case studies

Legal service pages

Multi-author blogs

Multi-hub organization content

SEO landing pages

API-driven applications

Strapi lets developers define content types, relationships, roles, API permissions, media fields, and workflows around the actual business model. The CMS is designed around structured content rather than forcing everything into posts, pages, plugins, and theme conventions.
The Ninth Problem: WordPress Is Not Always the Best Fit for DevOps
From a DevOps perspective, production edits happen through the admin. Plugin updates can break production. Database state and code state can drift. Staging parity is often weak. Rollbacks can be messy. Version control may not cover enough. Plugin settings live in the database. Moving between environments can be painful. CI/CD discipline is possible, but not automatic. With Next.js and Strapi, teams can use GitHub branches, pull requests, staging deployments, environment variables, observability, API testing, and controlled releases more naturally.
When WordPress Still Makes Sense
WordPress can still be a reasonable choice for:

Simple blogs

Small brochure sites

Nontechnical teams that need familiar editing

Low-complexity marketing sites

Sites with a disciplined plugin policy

Teams with professional maintenance

Organizations already invested in WordPress talent

But WordPress should be treated like a maintained application, not a set-it-and-forget-it website.
When I Would Avoid WordPress
Smart cases for avoiding WordPress include:

You need custom APIs.

You need structured content.

You need complex roles and permissions.

You need multi-site governance.

You need secure integrations.

You need modern frontend performance.

You need a design system.

You need automation workflows.

You need custom ecommerce logic.

You need enterprise-grade deployment discipline.

You do not have a maintenance budget.

You do not want plugin dependency.

You need full control over the frontend.

You want fewer moving parts.

Why I Prefer Strapi and Next.js for Serious Builds
Strapi is API-first, and Next.js gives frontend control. Content models are intentional. React components are version-controlled. SEO can be engineered directly. Structured data can be generated cleanly. Integrations are easier to reason about. Security responsibilities are clearer. Deployments can be handled through Git-based workflows. The architecture is easier to explain, maintain, and scale.Every stack has tradeoffs. Strapi and Next.js still require security, updates, hosting, monitoring, backups, and developer discipline. The advantage is that the architecture is explicit rather than hidden behind a pile of plugins.
A Better Way to Think About CMS Decisions
Questions to ask before choosing WordPress:

Will this site need custom content models?

Will multiple teams manage different content areas?

Will the frontend need high performance and design consistency?

Will the site connect to APIs, CRMs, ERPs, newsletters, or automations?

Will security updates be handled weekly?

Will plugins be audited?

Will there be staging and rollback?

Will the site need to scale?

Will the business tolerate downtime from plugin conflicts?

Is there a real maintenance budget?

If the answer to many of these is yes, WordPress may not be the best default.
Choose the operating model the team can maintain
WordPress deserves credit for what it did for the web. It made publishing accessible. It gave millions of people a way to build websites. It still has a massive ecosystem. But popularity isn't the same as architectural fit.The reason to avoid WordPress isn't because it's always bad. The reason to avoid it is because the average business doesn't want the maintenance burden that comes with a plugin-heavy CMS. Security, performance, governance, developer experience, and long-term ownership matter.WordPress is easy to start. The hard part is owning it responsibly. For modern business websites that need structure, APIs, automation, performance, and clean deployment workflows, I would rather start with Strapi and Next.js than spend years cleaning up plugin debt.If your website is starting to feel like a pile of plugins instead of a real platform, it may be time to rethink the architecture before technical debt becomes the business model.

Build a WordPress governance plan for plugin ownership, security updates, staging, backups, editor access, performance, and recovery.
