I give each Amplify environment a job. Development supports active backend changes. Staging tests an approved release candidate with production-like configuration. Production serves users and changes only through the release path. Branch names alone do not enforce those rules, so I document permissions and checks around them.

Amplify Gen 2 can deploy frontend and backend resources for connected Git branches. The Amplify fullstack branch deployment documentation describes branch auto-detection and Git-based promotion. I use those features with explicit patterns rather than connecting every temporary branch.

Define what each branch may do

Development can use synthetic records and test integrations. Staging may use production-shaped data but should not send real customer email, charge live payment methods, or write to production APIs. Production uses approved domains, credentials, retention settings, and alarms.

I write these restrictions beside the branch configuration. A developer should know whether a test submission will reach a real mailbox before opening the preview.

Control branch creation and removal

Automatic detection patterns such as
dev
,
staging
, and
feature/*
can create isolated fullstack deployments. I avoid patterns broad enough to deploy untrusted branches with sensitive roles. Closed branches should disconnect so abandoned resources and credentials do not accumulate.

Pull-request previews need the same review. If a preview shares a backend, I label that limitation. If it creates a backend, I confirm the cleanup behavior and service quota.

Separate configuration and secrets

Each branch receives the endpoint, callback URL, sender identity, and secret values appropriate for its job. The source code refers to stable names while the hosting configuration supplies branch values.

I maintain a configuration inventory with the key name, owner, exposure class, and environments where it exists. The inventory contains no secret values. It helps reviewers catch a production-only requirement before merge.

Promote one immutable commit

I promote a commit that already passed staging rather than rebuilding an uncommitted workspace. The release record includes the Git hash, typecheck, lint, test count, build result, and any data migration. If the production branch must receive a merge commit, I verify that exact hash after deployment.

Backend schema changes receive extra review because an old frontend may run during rollout. I favor additive changes before removals and document the compatibility window.

Verify behavior after the console turns green

A green Amplify job confirms its build and deployment steps. I still request the homepage, critical service routes, authentication, a safe read, and one controlled mutation. I check canonical and robots directives for public pages and inspect function errors.

I compare the deployed commit and backend endpoint with the release record. This catches a common failure where the right frontend reached the wrong environment.

Plan rollback by layer

Frontend rollback, backend rollback, and data restore are different actions. I record which prior frontend artifact can be redeployed, whether the schema remains backward compatible, and where the latest tested backup lives.

Branches have written responsibilities.

Secrets stay environment-specific.

Staging uses safe integrations.

The production commit is recorded.

Post-deployment checks cover the user journey.

Managing Development, Staging, and Production in Amplify

Use Amplify branch deployments with clear promotion rules, environment-specific configuration, and repeatable production checks.

An AWS Amplify vs Vercel comparison starts with several shared capabilities. Both can build a Next.js application from Git, host it behind a content delivery network, and create isolated deployments for review. The choice becomes clearer after you list the application's backend services, framework version, traffic pattern, and the people who will operate it.

This comparison was reviewed against official product documentation on August 22, 2026. Platform support, limits, and prices change, so verify the linked documentation before making a production decision.

Decision table

Requirement

AWS Amplify

Vercel

Next.js deployment

Managed Git-based hosting for supported Next.js releases and features

First-party platform integration maintained by the company that maintains Next.js

Preview workflow

Feature branches and pull-request previews

Preview deployment URL for each connected Git commit or pull request

Application backend

Amplify Gen 2 can define auth, data, storage, and functions as AWS resources

Vercel Functions plus marketplace or separately operated data, auth, queue, and storage services

AWS integration

Fits teams that want the frontend and application backend managed inside AWS

Can call AWS services, but identity, networking, regions, and deployment remain a cross-platform design

Cost model

Usage-based hosting plus the AWS services used by the backend

Plan and usage charges across transfer, requests, compute, images, and optional products

Portability

Frontend code remains Next.js; backend definitions can create AWS-specific dependencies

Frontend code remains Next.js; Vercel Functions and platform products can create provider-specific dependencies

Operational ownership

The team needs enough AWS knowledge to inspect IAM, CloudWatch, service quotas, and regional resources

The team works mainly through Vercel's deployment, function, observability, and billing controls

Check framework support before comparing features

A platform can support Next.js without supporting every release and runtime feature on the day it ships. AWS currently documents Amplify Hosting support for Next.js versions through version 15 on its Next.js support page. If the application uses Next.js 16, do not assume compatibility because an older project builds. Test the exact version and features or choose a documented deployment target.

Vercel documents a first-party Next.js integration, including preview deployments and managed support for rendering, image optimization, middleware, and other framework features. That close integration is useful when the team wants new Next.js behavior with minimal platform configuration. It can also increase dependence on Vercel-specific operations if the application adopts platform-only products.

Next.js itself can run on other infrastructure. The official deployment guide states that a Node.js server can run the framework, while streaming, shared caching, multi-instance coordination, and CDN behavior determine how well advanced features work at scale. The hosting decision covers those operational details, not only whether
next build
succeeds.

Deployment and preview environments

Amplify connects a repository branch to a hosted environment. Teams can maintain development, staging, and production branches, add branch-specific environment variables, and enable pull-request previews. AWS describes that workflow in its Next.js deployment guide.

Vercel uses Local, Preview, and Production as its default environments. A connected Git commit can create a unique preview URL, which makes design review and acceptance testing easy to share. Vercel explains the behavior in its deployment documentation.

Both workflows need environment discipline. Preview should not reuse a production database write credential. Staging needs representative configuration without sending test leads, payments, or email to real customers. Decide how secrets are created, rotated, and removed when a branch closes.

Backend integration changes the decision

Amplify Gen 2 is useful when a Next.js application needs Cognito authentication, AppSync data, DynamoDB, S3 storage, and Lambda functions and the team wants to define them together in TypeScript. The generated AWS resources still need architecture review. Authorization rules, IAM policies, stream retries, backups, quotas, and logs remain production responsibilities.

Vercel provides managed functions for server-side application code. Its Functions documentation covers regional execution and integration with APIs and databases. The team selects separate products for relational data, identity, queues, file storage, or long-running work unless another existing platform already provides them.

Choose based on the whole system. A frontend-only marketing site has different needs than an application whose users, files, background jobs, and audit events already live in AWS.

Observability and incident response

Amplify deployments expose build logs, and the AWS services behind an Amplify backend produce logs and metrics through their service consoles and CloudWatch. That gives experienced AWS teams detailed access, but information may span several services. Create dashboards and alarms for the user-facing workflow rather than expecting someone to watch each console.

Vercel's deployment view groups static assets, middleware, and functions, with links into logs and observability. Teams already working in Vercel may find that path faster for a Next.js-focused incident. External databases and APIs still need their own monitoring.

For either platform, define alerts for failed builds, server errors, form delivery, authentication problems, and unusual cost or traffic. Logs without an owner and response procedure do not provide operational coverage.

Compare cost drivers, not free-tier headlines

A useful estimate starts with expected builds, stored artifacts, outgoing data, dynamic requests, image transformations, function duration, logs, and backend usage. Amplify Hosting uses pay-as-you-go pricing, while each connected AWS service has its own meter. AWS describes the hosting model on the Amplify Hosting page.

Vercel charges managed infrastructure based on resources such as data transfer, requests, and compute duration, with plan allowances and product-specific meters. Its pricing documentation explains the billable categories.

Run three scenarios before choosing:

normal traffic and the current deployment frequency;

a traffic spike or campaign that increases uncached requests; and

a development month with more preview builds, image processing, and logs.

Include staff time. A lower infrastructure estimate may lose its advantage if the team spends more hours integrating services or diagnosing failures across platforms.

When Amplify is a strong fit

The application backend already uses AWS services and IAM boundaries.

The team wants auth, data, storage, and functions defined with Amplify Gen 2.

AWS billing, regions, logging, and governance are established inside the organization.

The required Next.js version and features appear in Amplify's current support documentation and pass a production-like test.

When Vercel is a strong fit

The team wants the most direct managed workflow for Next.js development and previews.

The backend is modest or already lives in services that integrate cleanly with Vercel Functions.

Product, design, and engineering teams depend on rapid preview review.

The team prefers one Next.js-oriented deployment and observability interface.

Run a short proof before moving production

Deploy one representative route, one dynamic API path, image optimization, authentication, and a background or webhook workflow. Exercise cache revalidation, environment promotion, rollback, logs, and an intentional failure. Measure build time and a realistic traffic sample. The proof should test the features most likely to constrain the application.
